The control of pressure and flow direction is important for the optimal functioning of hydraulic systems. Valves are designed to be robust and are precision manufactured, and able to withstand the various pressures exerted on them.

Directional valves are generally mounted on the base or housing of the the hydraulic cylinder keeping them exposed, allowing them to be connected to the pipes delivering hydraulic fluid and others carrying it away as it is exhausted from the cylinder.
